Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment: Peer Mentor Program
Team Building and Strategic Planning
Challenge
As part of its tobacco prevention efforts, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) sought to develop a strategic plan for its peer mentor program and improve cohesion among the peer mentors. Through the program, veteran tobacco prevention and control staff from local health agencies help build the capacities of newer tobacco agency staff across the state.
Project
CDPHE contracted with SageRiver to bring the peer mentors together for team building and
strategic planning sessions. SageRiver designed customized team building sessions based on key stakeholder interviews and program coordinator input. Subsequently, we designed and facilitated their strategic planning process and produced an actionable strategic plan.
The strategic plan focused on :
- Allowing for shared resources
- Eliminating duplicate services
- Improving communication
- Reducing the impact of change in the tobacco prevention and control system
Results
SageRiver facilitated the group through team building and strategic planning sessions, which enabled the peer mentors to mobilize around their common purpose of tobacco prevention and control in Colorado.
